Route 66 - Oklahoma

September 21st, 2005

Today featured mostly Route 66, which mostly no longer exists. So that mostly meant following the Route 40 "Business Routes". Some interesting towns I passed along the way. Going from Oklahoma into Texas. I hit two (and there were more) "Route 66 Museums" which is more of the same: manequins posing with a few antique cars (likely lacking engines or even frames) and a gift shop where you can buy placards for your wall proclaiming "I owe I owe so off to work I go" and other such modern truths.

Well I'm writing this update from the fireside lodging accomodations here at Lake McClellan in Texas. About an hour to Amarillo. I had prepared some beef spiedies from some ribeye steaks I got in the middle of nowhere along with red onion and yellow and red bell peppers. Delicious. The local raccoon already scoped it out but I busted him long before he got near my spiedie stash. Good luck opening that tupperware without thumbs, too, raccoon dude. But he'd figure it out. Smash it open with a rock, likely. Back at Lake Thunderbird there was a cat. And an opossum or some such creature in Arkansas. No snakes that I see. But I'm being cautious. Big campground not even on the map. I found it and it looked pretty nice. Plus I was dead hungry and wanted to cook out. Got here with enough daylight to set up camp and relax. All is quiet. No one here but me and the campground host way at the opposite end. I'm getting my $12 worth. :-)
