September 2nd, 2005
on schedule: Departed 9:00 AM from Salt Lake City. Arrived in Kearney, Nebraska at midnight (after adding an hour for the time zone change).
Nebraska ... in 1991 when we moved to California I remember Nebraska for the incredible lightning storm we saw traveling through. Not to leave a weatherless impression Nebraska once again impressed, though not quite as visually. First I saw one of the yellowest atmosphere's I have ever seen. I sensed rain might be coming but the sky really looked very unique. Well, it wasn't rain. Hail. Heavy hail. For a few miles it was sticking on the ground (this still being shorts and t-shirt weather even at these high elevations) which gave me a sudden panic pang of "oh my God what if highway 80 closed" which was compounded when I saw a sign that said "80" and "closed" but a quick second take revealed: phew! It's only the rest area that's closed. Not the highway! I had visions of suddenly finding myself needing snow chains on September 2.
Wyoming is a pretty state, someday maybe I'll stop somewhere when traveling through. I'm exhausted. When I get to Illinois I'm going to have to relay to Bruce that I'm sleeping in until my body wakes up, whenever that is. I'm going to need to recover. Coffee and Bawls are fueling me (Bawls is another high caffeine beverage which tastes kinda like sprite.)
